Italian Homage

Originally I thought I’d be painting in oils in Europe... but the possibilites expanded further after visiting Italy... the glory of the Byzantine mosaics from the still firing furnaces of Murano, Orsoni Glass in its HQ in Venice itself,  the San Vitale in Ravenna... & studying at the famous Spilimbergo mosaic university where I first observed the up-ended mosaic technique from our mentors , CaCo3.

I was hooked, I wanted to learn more, so undertook lessons from the wonderful Lea nd then craft it with my own voice while still paying homage to the ancient practices of Roman, Byzantine & Islamic mosaic.

Spilimbergo mosaic university

Simply the very best place on earth to learn about mosaic techniques. I loved it and learnt so much.

Where I was given my first mosaic lessons... and was welcomed into their family in the most hospitable way.

CaCo3 - Creators of the upended mosaic technique

We were fortunate to meet & chat with the members of CaCo3 whose brilliant work we'd admired so much in Spilimbergo with their upending technique. They became my mentors - as this technique was perfect for the movement I sought in the transition from my wave paintings to the mosaic wall sculptures.
